Dear ladies and gentlemen!
It has been more than six years since we bear the name of Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky; and since a long time we always thought of performing all his string quartets within one concert series. After considering different options during the last years, we voted for the option that you are part of right now – we have organized our own concert series dedicated to A. Zemlinsky. Its main goal is to perform all the chamber music for string quartet by A. Zemlinsky. Except the four string quartets, the audience will also hear the viola quintet or the beautiful string sextet with solo soprano voice „Maiblumen blühten überall“. By this series, we would like to pay tribute to the double anniversary of A. Zemlinsky (both years 2011 and 2012 are celebrated). Also, we would like to draw the attention to his chamber works especially here, in Prague; during his 16-years stay in Prague (1911-27), A. Zemlinsky has done a lot of good work in the Prague music life as a conductor and a teacher, and he was able to integrate the Czech and German musical life on the stages of theaters and concert halls. Therefore, I believe that his personality deserves to be promoted during the two anniversary years.
Outstanding Czech guest artists will join the Zemlinsky Quartet in most of the concerts to perform not only the Zemlinsky´s works for larger ensemble, but also famous chamber works by J. Brahms and A. Dvořák. Specifically, we also celebrate A. Dvořák in 2011 (170
th anniversary of birth), so it is quite appropriate to schedule a performance of his poetical string sextet or the two highlights of his chamber music – the viola quintet op. 97 and the piano quintet op. 81. Also, when performing the clarinet quintet by J. Brahms on November 24, 2011, we will celebrate exactly 120 years from its premiere - for the first time, it was played in a private concert by Richard von Mühlfeld and Joachim Quartet on November 24, 1891.
It would not be possible to create this series without an important financial support of the Alexander Zemlinsky Foundation in Vienna – we address our big thanks to the foundation! Media partner of the series is the Czech Radio 3 – Vltava; all the concerts will be recorded and broadcast not only in the Czech Republic, but also in all the EBU network. We would also like to thank all the other sponsors, and we believe that the project that they have supported will be successful and it would help spreading the knowledge about such an outstanding personality as Alexander Zemlinsky clearly was.
